In my line of work, we train for every scenario. We call it being mission-ready. But I’ve learned that the most important “gear” I carry isn’t in my pack—it’s the words I’ve put on paper for my wife and kids.
Writing these letters isn’t about being sad; it’s about Tactical Tenderness. It’s making sure your voice is louder than the distance. I treat a legacy letter like a mission briefing: it is vital, it is planned, and it is entirely for the good of the unit.
A Protective Presence
Some guys ask me why I’d ever write a “worst-case scenario” letter. My answer is simple: it’s just another form of protection. You hope they never have to open it, but if they do, you want them to hear your voice one last time. It is the greatest gift of security you can provide.
Staying on Watch
My K-9 partner, Chief, is always on watch. Loyalty is his baseline. I want my family to have that same sense of security. When I seal a letter, I’m telling my family that I am still guarding them, even if I’m halfway across the world.
