A Note from Amanda
We live in a world of “temporary.” Emails get deleted, hard drives crash, and social media platforms disappear. This week, I’m geeking out a little bit on the science of why I chose specific materials for our kits. Because if you’re writing a letter to be opened in 50 years, the paper better be ready for the journey.
Sealing the Promise: Why a Physical Letter is the Ultimate Commitment
In our digital lives, nothing is truly permanent. When you commit a message to a digital medium, you are accepting that its lifespan is dictated by the next software update.
But when you write a physical letter and seal it, you are making an ultimate commitment. You are creating an heirloom designed to defy time, ensuring its message reaches its destination—even if that destination is fifty years from now.
The Imperfect History of Paper
My family has done a beautiful job of protecting handwritten notes passed down through generations. These letters are treasured, but they often arrive with visible wear and tear: the paper is brittle, the edges are yellowed, and the ink is fading into illegibility.
When I started Across the Years, With Love, I knew we had to solve this preservation problem. The goal couldn’t just be to get the message written; it had to be preserved as if it were written yesterday.
The Archival Commitment: Three Layers of Protection
A legacy is only as strong as its weakest material. That’s why every component in our kits is carefully chosen for maximum permanence:
- The Paper (Acid-Free Stock): Standard paper contains acid that causes it to turn yellow and break down over time. All of our stationery is acid-free, preventing that decomposition and providing a permanent canvas for your words.
- The Ink (Archival Quality): Even the best paper is useless if the ink fades. We include (and recommend) archival ink pens that are proven not to fade, ensuring your specific handwriting remains clear for decades.
- The Seal and Storage: Once you seal your letter, it is protected inside a Water-Resistant Envelope, creating a barrier against dust and moisture. Placing that envelope in our Linen Keepsake Box ensures it is securely nested until its opening date.
The Ultimate Commitment
When you seal that envelope, you are doing more than just closing a flap. You are intentionally creating a physical, analog artifact that is designed to survive the obsolescence of technology and the decay of time.
This commitment transforms a simple letter into a permanent, undeniable promise of your love.
